INTERACTION
BEYOND TABLETS
Interaction Design, Concept, Prototyping
When considering the outcomes of ubiquitous computation it is equally important to remember the inconsequential nature of common things as a valuable affordance. The loss of a cheap pen is considered inconsequential but the loss of a mobile phone is considered a painful inconvenience. Could it be that computation will not be truly ubiquitous until it is first regarded as insignificant?
PROJECT: Design an interactive and tangible interface using cloud computing.
BACKGROUND: In contrast to a world of feature–loaded tablets and touch screens, we wanted to simulate a future of inexpensive and mundane computational objects. We used the pen and book as ideal examples for the execution of this perspective. Our pen demonstrates the ability to write on a "paper" notepad and send information to the network cloud at the same time. Both of these objects could simulate the experience of a system that utilizes simple access points to the network cloud.
INSIGHTS: By simulating the user experience involved in using these simple computational objects, we discovered the interactions and best practices for designing simple and un-precious interfaces. Designing for these interfaces is vastly different from designing for tablets and makes for a familiar user experience.
