DESIGNERS AS EDUCATORS

The role of designer has changed drastically in recent years. The designer’s tools have been homogenized and packaged for the everyday consumer, leaving the designer without a point of differentiation and value. Indeed, today everyone is a designer. This environment will lead to far-reaching adaptations to the role of designer.

These adaptations and skills will result in the production of scholarly and educative design output. The realization of this educative output, still in its infancy, is called "design research." I believe that design research will be the point of differentiation that will redefine the role of the designer as something separate from a dilettante designer.

To further communicate this point, I have written my prediction of the future of designers and how they must adopt an educative role. I also created a motion piece as a declaration that design research is the key point of differentiation for designers of the future. I created the piece by systematically recording my actions as I make my argument on-screen using typical design-related-software.
