DESIGN DIALOGUES FALL 08
I felt it was appropriate to begin this series with Benjamin Bratton, a theorist that opened my mind to the ways in which the world is structured as a network. Bratton used the example of the potato to describe the structure of nodes and interactions within a network. I began to observe this phenomenon in so many ways, including the methodologies of the speakers that followed him. I believe that success in this new environment will come primarily as ideas adapt this model of serving the network rather than the individual. With this, I thought it only appropriate to design a poster as a structure that is representational of a network.
ASSIGNMENT: Design a poster for the 2008 Design Dialogue Series.
Conceptually represent what the series meant to you.
MAKING: It was imperative that the structure of the poster represent this new understanding of the network. I used the potato as the example, just like Mr. Bratton, because it was one of the only concepts he gave that I was able to grasp with out extreme mental strain. I have included my notes of other speakers.
MEANING: Theory can inform design. I found it eye-opening and exciting to take this new network perspective and begin to observe differently. All of the speakers shared their methods for success and in each presentation I could see that their success was manifest through the affordances of the network environment.
