CAR SONG

We can see life and hear music in all that we observe. Motion and composition are tools that can make life and music more evident. In previous projects, I explored the ways in which objects are related to systems and vise versa. Through these projects, I explored how objects can take on behavior and how systems can be arranged to create new meaning.

ASSIGNMENT: 1) Communicate the words "object" and "system" using only sound as a medium. 2) Communicate the words "object" and "system" using sound and motion.
MAKING: I wanted to take something common in my life and the lives of others and record the many objects that make-up the system of another object. I chose my car, a 2004 Dodge Intrepid. The Intrepid is no longer produced in factories and is already on the way to extinction. This was important to my video project. I had no recording device, so I used my cheap video camera to capture sound. Incidentally, I shot the piece at night and had only a flash light for lighting. It didn't matter because I only needed enough video to help me recognize the sound I was recording. However, when I viewed the video, I enjoyed the darker quality and decided to reshoot the video to match my composed song.
MEANING: All objects are systems of objects, components, and atoms. These objects and systems have qualities, behaviors, and personalities. We attach this meaning naturally. Motion and composition can be used to attach meaning to objects and systems.
